Teaching your children properly about stereotypes

  • Scene: Lady and her child are at the dog park as I arrive
  • Lady: [Child's Name Redacted], stay away from that dog it will bite you
  • Me: I'm sorry but I couldn't help but overhear what you said to you daughter. Did you by chance contemplate the lesson you are teaching her? Do you also instruct her that all muslims are terrorists, all black men are gang members or that since I look jewish (and am) that I'm cheap? All of which are false. Stereotypes are based in some fact but are horrendously over-extrapolated. They are not in themselves fact. You should instead teach your daughter about your ignorance and stupidity. It so happens my dog is very sweet and just because you watched a special on television about Pit Bulls does not mean mine is aggressive.
  • Lady: (Looks at me in disbelief yet has no response).
  • Lady and Daughter: (They Leave)
  • Me: That's a great way to raise your child
